Governor Roy Cooper spoke about the odds of medical marijuana legalization in 2023 this week. He said he believes the bill would have an opportunity to pass in the next legislative session, and he also spoke of his support for the bill.
Governor Cooper noted racial disparities in enforcement for marijuana charges and cited it as one of the reasons marijuana should be decriminalized in North Carolina. He believes cannabis should be decriminalized in small amounts.
Legislation for medical marijuana passed through the North Carolina Senate in June of 2022 but did not make it through the house. We are hopeful that the 2023 legislative session will include the passage of medical marijuana legislation.
The governor also has asked state attorneys to start thinking about issuing pardons for marijuana offenses. This would include simple possession and possibly other non-violent marijuana-related offenses.
Governor Cooper hopes to help end the stigma against marijuana as medicine. A poll taken back in May of 2021 showed that 82% of North Carolina residents want medical cannabis to be legalized.
The governor also pointed out that officials should be focusing on violent crime and drug trafficking rather than simple possession of marijuana, a drug that has proven its many benefits to millions of Americans.
North Carolina remains one of only a few states that have not legalized medical marijuana.
