What the 2022 U.S. Senate Election in North Carolina Could Mean for Medical Marijuana

The Senate election in North Carolina is scheduled for November 8, 2022. The primary elections were initially scheduled for March 8, 2022, but were delayed by the North Carolina Supreme Court until May 17th, 2022.

Republican U.S. senator Richard Burr recently announced that he will not be seeking re-election, which leaves the door wide open for change.

One of the front-runners for the Democratic party in North Carolina is Cheri Beasley. Beasley has spoken about medical marijuana multiple times, taking to social media to express her support.

Via Twitter, Beasley writes, “Legalizing marijuana in North Carolina would help small NC farms thrive, strengthen our local economy, and reform our criminal justice system. Legalization just makes sense-and as Senator, I’ll work to get it done.”

The front-runner for Republicans is Ted Budd. Budd has not spoken directly on the issue of medical marijuana, but his voting records are public, and here’s what they tell us:

Ted Budd will not support legislation that would legalize medical marijuana. Back in April, he voted “No” on the Medical Marijuana Research Act.

What Does This Mean?

If Ted Budd is elected as senator, it will likely take a bit longer for medical marijuana to become legal in North Carolina. However, it is inevitable that this will happen either way.

If Cheri Beasley is elected, we can expect the process to move along much more quickly.

If you are eagerly awaiting the legalization of medical marijuana, it is in your best interest to consider the nominee's stance on the issue when you vote.
