There has been a lot of back and forth, but we may finally have a policy for medical marijuana that straddles both sides of the aisle!
Many North Carolina residents have been waiting for medical marijuana to be legalized for quite some time. People just want to have relief from the pain they suffer from, physically or mentally, on a daily basis.
Back in April, Senate Bill 711 (also known as the North Carolina Compassionate Care Act) was filed. It was introduced by one of the legislature’s most powerful Republicans, Senator Bill Rabon. This bill would allow qualifying patients to use medical marijuana in the state, as well as offer limited growing rights for medicinal use! While this bill isn’t the first of its kind, it is the first bill with actual support from legislators on both sides of the aisle.

Who would qualify for medical marijuana?
If the bill is passed and signed into a law, it would allow people suffering from different conditions to qualify for medical marijuana in North Carolina and give them a sense of hope! Cannabis can offer greater relief than other medications. Some of the qualifying conditions are:
Cancer
Epilepsy
Glaucoma
HIV/AIDS
ALS
Crohn’s disease
Parkinson’s disease
This senate bill would also benefit the veteran population which is 8.3% of North Carolina’s population. Many veterans still suffer from PTSD or wartime injuries which could be helped by the legalization of medical marijuana.
What’s the status of the bill now?
While there is no set date for when the North Carolina Compassionate Care Act may be made into an actual law, there is hope that progress will continue to be made for this cause!
